ABOUT Anuradha Rao
Dr. Anu Rao is a skilled cardiologist and Director of the Women’s Cardiovascular Center at CVA. Her 20-year expertise in Woman's Cardiology is unique in the Birmingham area. She grew up in Canada where she attended medical school and internship at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. She completed her residency in Michigan and went on to do her cardiology training at Tulane University. Dr. Rao is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and numerous other regional and national cardiology associations. As Assistant Professor in both the Section of Cardiology and the University School of Public Health and Assistant to the Chancellor on Women’s Health at Tulane University, she developed one of the first Woman's Heart Programs in the United States. Dr. Rao also secured the National Center of Excellence in Woman's Health recognition for Tulane.
She arrived in Birmingham in 2000 and has served as President of the Birmingham Chapter of the American Heart Association. Dr. Rao has raised funds for various entities including the Heart Association, The Vestavia Library, and the Women's Fund. Last year she was honored as one of Birmingham's 'Smart' Women by the Women's Fund. Dr. Rao joined private practice with Cardiovascular Associates in 2001 and chaired the research committee at CVA for several years, while being the principal and sub-investigator of numerous clinical trial studies. Her clinical focus is general and preventive cardiology for men and women.
In her spare time, she spends time with her husband and friends traveling, hiking, sipping wine and communing over coffee. Dr. Rao sees patients at the Colonnade Parkway office and is accepting patients with general cardiology conditions. She performs cardiac diagnostic procedures at the Brookwood Baptist Medical Center and Grandview Medical Center.
